Long-lasting eye make-up

Get long-lasting eyeshadow, eyeliner and mascara with our top make-up tips

Dream eye colour that stays
“The modern way to wear summer metallics is to dab a tiny amount of cream shadow over the lid and blend out up to the socket only,” says Val Garland, artistic director for YSL. Try one of YSL’s new Water-Resistant Eye Shadows, £19. I’d say they’re everything-resistant – so much so it actually says “blend rapidly” on the instructions as it’s dry in two seconds! You need only the tiniest amount and the colour doesn’t move for the rest of the day.

Eyeshadow primers
Alternatively, eyeshadow primers truly keep your usual eye make-up in place, prevent it from getting stuck in the creases and make it virtually smudge-proof. Try Elizabeth Arden Advanced Eye Fix Primer, £18.

Define eyes
Liquid eyeliner has four times the staying power of pencil liners, but it can look quite harsh in daylight, while pencils can smudge too quickly. For a good all-rounder, try using gel eyeliner if you haven’t already. Thanks to volatile silicones that help the colour glide on smoothly, gel eyeliner stays soft on the skin long enough to blend, and then dries fast – but it can be a devil to remove. They’re perfect for warmer summer days too – try Clinique Brush-On Cream Liner, £11.74, or Prescriptives Perfect Every Line Gel Eyeliners, £13.

Top tip
Make mascara waterproof. Whether you’re anticipating tears of joy or simply watery eyes and hay fever, you’ll want your lashes to stay looking defined and last through any eventuality. Beauty aficionados will love Lancôme’s new Waterproof Ôscillation, £28. It stays in place and makes every lash look defined.
