Is organic food best?
The whole ethos about eating organic is not just about nutrition. Organic farming is better for the environment, animal welfare and sustainability. It means there are no pesticides or routine antibiotics used. And although the Soil Association has scientific evidence that organic milk is better for you, milk wasn't mentioned in the report.
Of course, particularly in these cash-strapped times, it's far more important to eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, organic or not. Farmers don't liberally spray fruit and veg these days and good growers do all they can to use natural ways of combating pests.
The same goes for livestock where so many farmers are rearing animals well without them having an organic certification. It's about knowing your sources. And we couldn't feed the nation 100% organically anyway.
Though I can't in all conscience, countenance the benefit of a battery chicken versus a free-range organic one. There is no comparison in flavour without even considering the miserable life of that poor battery hen. The same goes for eggs. I'd much rather eat a proper chicken or humanely reared meat once a week and go veggie for the rest of the time than buy a flavourless, cage-reared bird.
