July seasonal food
Blueberries
July is a great month for legumes, herbs and berries. Enjoy the best of British summer food!
Vegetables
Peas and beans: Peas are sweet and snappy and the first runner beans have arrived. Broad beans are best now at the beginning of their season, as they get a bit tough and bitter by the end.
Aubergines: are widely cultivated in Britain though people often assume they are from more exotic lands. They come in a wide variety of shapes, colours and sizes so make a break from the familiar shiny black pear shaped variety and try something new.
Herbs: Parsley, thyme, mint and basil should be growing like crazy. Use basil to make your own pesto, toss mint through salads and add to refreshing summer drinks.
Fruit
Berries: British grown raspberries are everywhere at this time of year and they are so delicious you can't help but eat them straight from the punnet! Strawberries, blackcurrants, gooseberries and blueberries are also growing in abundance. Delicious with some whipped cream and meringue. Freeze any berries you don’t eat for the winter months.
Fish
Sardines, herring and mackerel: These fish are ideal for the barbecue. Look out for those from Cornish waters
Flat fish: Plaice, Dover sole and lemon sole are excellent at this time of year. Serve simply with a squeeze of lemon and parsley.
Meat
Lamb: Lamb is a terrific meat in summer - perfect for barbecues
