EVENT: Open-air Ice Skating

  • Emma Pritchard

Step outside for a memorable experience on one of the following open-air ice rinks

London: Choose from lunchtime workouts to evening skating sessions for fun at the Somerset House rink. You can even indulge your inner ballerina with Nutcracker Hour, where you can skate to Tchaikovsky's ballet score. Work up an appetite then indulge in a Tiffany's-inspired cupcake. Runs to 23 January 2011, somersethouse.org.uk

Glasgow: Boasting the largest outdoor ice rink in Europe and an impressive vista of the magnificent George Square and City Chambers, Scotland's vibrant city is definitely the place to go for a memorable skating experience. Runs to 30 December 2010, glasgowloveschristmas.com

York: The Ice Factor is back, this time in a new location next door to the city's designer outlet - perfect for any last-minute Christmas shopping. There's an impressive tree in the middle of the rink to skate round and a traditional German market on the outside; perfect ingredients for feeling festive. Runs to 9 January 2011, theicefactor.co.uk

Eden Project: One of the country's most unique ice-skating experiences. Skate away with the greenhouse biomes and bustling Winter Wonderland as a backdrop. Runs to 27 February 2011, edenproject.com Note: The rink is currently closed due to recent flooding but will be
reopening in the next few weeks. Check the website for up-to-date
information.

Cardiff: The Welsh capital hosts its 10th Winter Wonderland this year and, with an ice rink, ice bar and colourful fairground, it's sure to be its best event ever! Runs to 3 January 2011, cardiff-festival.com
